Escape the Vegas Heat and head to Mt. Charleston

22nd Jun 2015

As we approach summer in Las Vegas, there's not much happening in the equine community outdoors. So this is a perfect time to escape the heat and head to higher elevations either locally or regionally. With a love for the outdoors, especially the country, I feel the need to always bring my four-legged friends which are my horses and dogs. Unfortunately, some of those longer trips are not always feasible in just a few days or few hours, so why not explore Mt. Charleston. The best place to visit in our own backyard.. Approximately forty-six miles from the Las Vegas strip, Mt. Charleston offers much to do for a quick getaway that high temperatures bring of the desert heat.

Of course riding horses and camping is among the first things on my list to do, but hiking and bike riding are also available along some of the back trails of the mountain. If you hike or ride far enough, you may even have the opportunity to see water just above the mountain called Mary Jane Falls. I like to the end my day with some enjoyable dutch oven cooking since log fires are not prohibited on the mountain. Pictured below are some photos of this beautiful place along with maps of trails and a web-link to view dutch oven recipes for camping.
